Albert Herring Tickets - London
For the first time at the London Coliseum, May Day celebrations will be held in a fresh, new, witty take on Benjamin Britten’s beloved coming-of-age comedy.
After the success of ENO’s previous semi-staged productions – Duke Bluebeard’s Castle, Gloriana, and Suor Angelica – multi-award-winning Antony McDonald will direct Albert Herring and be conducted by Daniel Cohen - who makes his debut on the podium for ENO.
England, 1943. Loxford is a typical small market town, where little escapes the attentive eye of the redoubtable Lady Billows and her housekeeper Florence Pike. As no virtuous girls are left in the village, the organising committee for the May Queen decides to break with tradition and crown Albert Herring - the innocent and shy greengrocer’s boy - as the May King.
Albert soon discovers that heavy is the head that wears the May King crown, as his friend Sid intervenes with plenty of mischievous assistance as Albert accepts the cash prize - and his fate. Join us as Albert’s newfound village status descends into an alcohol-fuelled evening of self-discovery and debauchery.
Britten's 1947 composition shows his versatility with this good-natured comedy and gentle ribbing of English Victorian music with his light-hearted touch encouraging the humour to shine through the music.
